Not surprised individuals find themselves compelled to join the fight against ISIS.
As for Americans, we have a history of heading overseas to fight. In the 1930s, the Abraham Lincoln Brigade fought fascists during the Spanish Civil War. American pilots went AWOL and flew for Britain and China well before the United States got involved in World War II. Jewish Americans have served in the Israel Defense Forces. As well according to a 1896 court ruling its not illegal to do this on a voluntary basis. You just need to make sure you not on the wrong side of the fence.
Just a couple of Americans:
* Patrick Maxwell from Texas - spotted by State Department and Special Forces spotted him with Kurdish.
* Jordan Matson - Wisconsin - fought with YPG in same area as Mr. Rutter
* Brian Wilson from Ohio - fighting with YPG

I think there were a couple Americans killed there, too - not military, just over there fighting.

Yup... no names at the tips of my fingers but i believe one was a fighter & the other was a medic
