President Bush, Sr. certainly earned that honorable discharge; furthermore, his experience in what was, if not the largest naval battle then the 2nd largest, in the Battle of the Philippine Sea took much courage & fortitude. In the days prior to SAM missiles, the anti-aircraft guns aboard all combat ships had become much more lethal. Most of the powers actually had radar guided firing and so as one part of the sky was covered another gun(s) could pick up the next part of the sky. They became quite lethal and so the dive bombers had short expected life spans.

SGT John " Mac " McConnell For some reason I always had a favorable impression of 41, based a lot I guess on his WWII combat record. He was definitely in the thick of it and served honorably. He had a successful gvt career later including a stint as CIA director. As President he made an honorable and honest decision to follow the UN mandate in Kuwait and did not authorize advancing troops into Iraq to overthrow Saddam when it would have been very easy to do so. He got tripped up by the famous 'no new taxes' statement which he should not have made. Many think he did a lot better than both of his evil sons.
