1. Lead by example (never ask a soldier to do a task you're not willing to do). 2. Set the example (if you're going to ask a soldier to get a haircut make sure you're high and tight before you do it). 3. Be the example (you are always under a microscope, no matter how minor the interaction it may be sure, it will get back to the others if you are not doing what you say you are doing. These are my 3 leadership traits. I started to listen to his tape about getting up early take 10 minutes; good advice not my style.

1) Be human. Treat others the way you want to be treated. I’ve gotten more out of my Soldiers and NCOs by being a approachable, mindful leader than I ever did when I was a by the book, lightning rod, back in my young NCO days. Find what works vs what doesn’t…but most of all, what allows your Soldiers to give their best effort.
2) Technical/Tactical competence. There is more to the Army than being good at PT and wearing your uniform the right. Are your Soldiers trained? Are your young NCOs familiar with human resource functions? Do you know and exercise your equipment? Can you shoot, move, and communicate when you’re asked to? Are you investing in your Soldiers, LTs, and young NCOs? There are a lot of facets to being a leader…they all require time and attention.
3) Are you taking care of yourself mentally and physically? You cannot lead men and women, and give them your best if you’re not at your best. Take advantage of the programs that are available that’ll help put you on the right track. Make those programs known to your team. I am living proof that the behavioral health services work.
