COL Lee Flemming, a great movie was made about this event, starring Rick Schroder! It's assumed that Whittlesey simply couldn't live with his mental anguish post WWI and committed suicide by jumping ship, but it could never be proven one way or the other. Nonetheless, he was an extraordinary man and leader.

Me, too. I was hoping for some good WWI films during the centennial, but if any have been released, I've missed them.

Thanks for the post Col Flemming. My uncle was a charter member of "La Société des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux" or the 40 and 8s. He had five campaign bars on his WWI Victory medal. I don't think there has ever been enough emphasis on the first world war as the germination point of many of the issues we face today.
