Gear head post #14
A lot of people laugh at me when I tell them that an 1989 Chevy Cavalier Z24 is my all time favorite car. It's a Gen 2 Phase 1 J-Body, and those of us who are J-Body enthusiasts call it a mini muscle car. Do not be confused with the 3rd Gen piles of junk that looked like every other sedan out there. The Gen 1 and 2 Cavaliers were something to behold.
It will also be the second car I plan on restoring during my break. My plan for this car is to turn it into an 11 second daily summer show driver. I plan on lowering it, upgrading the suspension, handling and brakes, aftermarket wheels and tires, rebuilding the 5 speed manual transmission and swapping out the tired 2.8 MPFI 60degreeV6 and installing a rebuilt customized 3400 60degreeV6 I pulled from a Chevy Ventura I found in a junk yard. I will then add a turbo, cold air intake, oil cooler and a total custom fabricated exhaust system.
The interior will remain stock as I really love the blockyness of Chevy interiors in the 80's. But will be adding a sound system.
The body is getting overhauled. I will be shaving all badges, trim, luggage rack and door handles, and extending down the existing stock ground effects kit by 1 1/2". I will also be adding a stock spoiler from a Gen 2 Phase 2 Z24. Swapping out the tail lights from another Gen 2 Phase 2 Z24. To accommodate the shaved doors, I will be adding a keyless entry, and a top of the line security system.
I have owned several 89 Z24s over the years, and let me tell you it never ended well. 1 was totaled by tow truck when the driver plowed into it while it was parked in my driveway, yes he was drunk. I used the money to buy another one and it got stolen and stripped. I used that money to buy a 3rd one, and it was taken by my ex wife in the divorce. She let it sit for a few years, then sold it to a wrecking company for $250 (she did the same thing to my 63 Nova SS).
Yes, technically the 89 Z24 can be considered a classic car. This on eis all for me, I do not plan on selling it.
