So soon after meeting with Putin, this could be a ploy to get Ukraine to back off a counter offensive. That seems to be the tactic communist used against us in Vietnam. Hopefully, Ukraine is familiar with that history.

Nor do I. I had a Squadron Commander who was an aide to Nixon during his opening visit to China. If you leaned nothing else from his stories of that trip, it was to never trust China.
