I am wondering why thinly veiled...? Seems pretty deliberate and overt to me!

Agree Colonel. Their efforts have been fairly obvious to me. Building islands and converting them to bases with airstrips and similar actions make it fairly evident that they are staking claim to the region. When they seized our underwater drone in 12/2016 (in plain view) it demonstrated that they will do whatever they want and are almost daring us to stop them. Let's hope they don't get active with shipping and area denial, because the shipping lanes are globally strategic. At that point, intervention will become almost a given and it could lead to serious conflict. Neither them or Russia pose a serious military threat against US or allies head-on, but the possible of escalation to nuclear should always be considered. That option anywhere does not end well for the World.
