A chronic tardiness that has left the nation short-handed of aircraft carriers and submarines, wasted billions of dollars and kept countless sailors from getting back to sea led Navy leaders to sack one of the captains of America's four public shipyards.
It also led those leaders to entrust the less-than-ideal state of affairs to the captain currently in charge of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
Capt. Kai Torkelson, in charge of Norfolk Naval Shipyard, was relieved this past week by Vice Adm. Bill Galinis, commander of Naval Sea Systems Command. His reason? "...A loss of confidence in leadership to correct underlying performance issues that affect Norfolk Naval Shipyard's ability to meet ship maintenance schedules," said Colleen E. O'Rourke, a spokeswoman for Naval Sea Systems Command.
In the same move, the Navy will turn to Capt. Dianna Wolfson, Puget Sound Naval Shipyard's leader since June 2019, to make improvements where Torkelson failed.
