An employee of the Community Alliance of Lane County called Eugene police early last week to report that the large mural outside the organization's office was defaced with thick lines through some of the painting's words and damage to three faces of depicted civil rights leaders.
The mural was most likely defaced the weekend of Feb. 20, according to police.
"Once again, hatred has lashed out to intimidate and strike fear in our community,” Eugene Mayor Lucy Vinis said in a statement released Monday. “We condemn this act. As mayor, I join our City Council in our commitment to ensuring that Eugene fulfills its promise to be a welcoming, inclusive and safe community for all. This hatred has no place here."
