City of Independence dedicates permanent markers to ‘The Neck Neighborhood’

They tore down the homes and many families were left struggling to find housing because they didn’t get a great price for their homes or due to the restrictions of selling to Black families.

There are new markers in McCoy Park that have the last names of the Black families who lived there during the time of urban renewal. The other plaque has ‘The Neck Neighborhood 1877-1966′ with a map of where the homes were.

These markers are a reminder of the consequence of unfair practices and policies and recognize the families who had to leave.
