SCOTUS gives signal that civil assist forfeiture may not survive judicial review.
If you haven't heard of this before it is where law enforcement can seize property without even charging someone and that person has prove they didn't do anything to get it back. As you might expect that has led to several abuses.

I remember it well from my short stint in law enforcement..the courts made money, the local police departments made money and police officers benefitted from purchasing seized assets(weapons, cars, real estate) usually at a ridiculously low price. Too much incentive to arrest people...an old adage says "When you are a hammer..everything looks like a nail..."
