JI came about from the relationships of those who had fought in Afghanistan against the Soviets and who returned to SE Asia - which is not to be confused with those who fought in Afghanistan against the United States and NATO and returned to SE Asia. It was really the Indonesians that turned the tide on JI -- and yet they would not finish them off and instead allowed hate to be preached even from prison. It was headed out the door when IS arrived - and things have changed since the old AQ days.

As much as I detest McCain, the politician part, he was probably right for saying what the left fried him for. Our war with radical Islam could last 100 years, that may have been prophetic. They are adjusting and metastasizing almost on a daily basis.

Interesting view Bill - guess all depends on how well you know them and how well we have a game these days... It was a good game we played till they went over to IS... but then we strayed away. Luckily the Aussies have not strayed like we have.

So then the debate becomes when do we get involved, if Trump lives up to his word he would say that the Indians would need to pay for our Military intervention, what if they say no then we let it fester until when? They attack outside of the region? It will be interesting to see how the new administration deals with these emerging of waning elements.

Bill - it is re-involved and not involved. We removed our JSOTF from Jolo - and then now we have diplomatic issues with PI. Not sure your India piece on this - but it would help to figure a way to get them involved with Indonesia. Getting ahead of the IS JI is going to be a tough game - and it can not be played unilaterally - it takes a regional effort and we are needing to figure out how to do it better than last time. Attack outside the region remains a question - attack Americans inside.. yes.
