Just a year? Does the victim have to deal with this for "just" a year? I hope he goes in a "man" and comes out "less than a man".

Victims of assault live with the hell of flashbacks and counseling for years afterwards, but the men (and women) that do it and literally get a slap on the wrist (if that) move on with their lives. I am all for bringing back chemical castration practices for men like him, that's if they don't get physically castrated in jail or by a victim like the one that recently did it! I wont go into details but I am a victim of men like the monsters they have let out early or let free because there was "not enough evidence". He needs to rot in prison and no tjust get a year, of which hell probably only do 6 months.

This is incredibly sad news because it indicates the woman/girl who was sexually assaulted was mentally handicapped to the point that she incapable of consenting SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL. I am glad that Coast Guard cadet Michael Shermot was found guilty at Court Martial but surprised he only received a one-year sentence.

Some judges use the mental handicap of the victim as a reason that the person is not guilty.

Candy Alkaabi - any judge who would use a mental handicap of the victim to base his/her judgement that the rape was consensual merely because the victim can't communicate clearly should be disbarred.

LTC Stephen F. - I agree I also think that some judges lately have been out of line, one judge even asked the woman in open court why she didn't keep her knees together......and people wonder why so many victims stay silent!

I'm guessing she may not have been able to consent because she might be a minor. That's even worse. No details on the victim, so the 1 year prison sentence may be for less than actually consummating the act. Sexual assault has a full range of offenses. In any case, it's inexcusable.
I missed the word, "impairment". My apologies. Probably dealt with physical or mental issues.

Disgraceful, not only the act but only a year punishment! What is going on with the judicial system when these offenders are getting such light sentences?
