This story really frosts me (that's the only way I can respond without being criticized for my language). I long have been opposed to "Zero Tolerance", in which fighting back results in the same punishment as being bullied. Once upon a time, every child knew how to respond to a bully. Fight back. And if the victim was outclassed, others would step in to help. I wonder, in this case, how many fellow students might have defended this child but were reluctant to risk the punishment. It's a lesson that our children will take into adulthood. Think about it. Aggressor nations are bullies and the world has allied to defeat them. Will they in the future?

When I was 5 years old, there was a 7 year old up the hill who picked on me at every opportunity. I went to my Mother and she told me she can't fight my battles for me. I needed to take care of the situation myself. The next time he came into our driveway to pick on me, I knocked him down and jumped on top of him, pummelling him. Apparently, while my Mother couldn't handle my battles for me, she sure could stop them as she came out and pulled me off of him. He never bothered me again. It was an important lesson for me. To this day I don't like bullies and will fight back or defend those who are being bullied.
