To be clear, assuming all warrants were in place and properly issued, Comey is correct and it isn't spying in any negative sense. Barr also says he didn't mean it in any pejorative sense but at this point in his career he should be experienced enough to know that it would likely be taken this way. This isn't Barr's first time to the rodeo.
So sure, Barr could have screwed up and used language a person in his position should have known better than to use. Particularly since such wording damages the credibility of the agency he heads, and an agency where credibility is extremely important.
Of course Comey made his share of verbal screw ups as well so there's that.

Except that the FBI has a long history of illegal wiretaps and improper warrants. I don't see it necessarily as damaging credibility when credibility was damaged long ago with abuses. I call it healthy skepticism. It is interesting though authorized surviellance by Robert F Kennedy (signed off on) against MLK is called spying today. Tell me the difference please? Even so the FBI was engaged in spying against King long before RFK was Attorney General and authorized it.

SPC Erich Guenther I can't argue with what you say about the FBIs past. I think the difference was in the MLK case there was no underlying reason for the survalence, other than political suppression and in this case it likely stemmed from a foreign intelligence investigation when they were led to the Trump campaign (some of which was his own fault, if you don't want people to think you might be a gangster, don't say gangster stuff).
But in today's contentious political climate it is tough for us to look at any investigation outside of a political lens, which is unfortunate for all of us.

SPC Kevin Ford - I think I read somewhere the FBI thought MLK was working as a undercover Communist............so it stemmed from the same basis as Trumps. I think the FBI is overly paranoid and needs to obtain more evidence on counter intelligence on high profile figures. Now if the allegation was for something of immediate danger such as terrorism I might be more forgiving. However the basis here was relatively benign.

An FBI that used illegal wiretaps against Martin Luther King because it felt the country was threatened by him. Even after the wiretaps were made legal by then Attorney General Robert F Kennedy...........it's called spying today NOT survelliance. Comey knows this fact but see how he carefully selects his words now.

What would you expect from Comey, the flip flop expert. Do nothing expert.

Yes of course surveillance against Martin Luther King is called Spying by Comey but Surveillance against Trump is called Surveillance. Comey is doing that intellectual tap dance in public...........very sad and shows he is biased.
