The media throws around the word "hero" a lot. Many times someone is characterized as a "hero" because they do the right thing, make personal sacrifices, etc - all good and worthy, but not necessarily "heroic".
This is a hero. Based on this story, this commander put himself in danger and ultimately sacrificed his life to save his NCO (and possibly other innocent personnel).
I'm glad to see there are still commanders who do the right thing to balance out the ones that are focused on themselves.

The whole things is a tragedy in that two lives. tow families are ruined. My sympathies go out to Colonel Schroeder's family, friends and colleagues. This should not be happening in our military. The sad thing is the that the perp was a former FBI agent, a highly respect position. I ca only suspect that he cracked under pressures or perhaps was suffering from PTSD.
