I certainly hope they come up with a great working plan for this issue. This is one of the issues that caused me to separate in 1993. It was hard for me, although I was married at that time to another AD military member, we were young Airmen and childcare for 2 children was steep. Once my kids were older and no longer required childcare I was able to go back in the military to finish my career. I still needed a Family Care Plan but by that time I was in an area that my family was close by and were able to help if I needed it. They often offered to keep the kids during my military career and said they would send them to me during holidays and summer vacation, but my belief was and still is, if I made these children, I need them to be with me and I need to raise them, they are my responsibility. Case in point, when i returned to the military after my 10 year break, I had to go to tech school, it was a 9 month training. I had family that lived 2 miles down the road and requested I leave the kids with them (16 and 12 by that time). I said no, they have a father and he is not doing anything to help with raising them (besides the child support that I had to fight for), he can come and keep them for the 9 months that I am going to school. My family was hurt but I explained this was a requirement for me, that as parents, we need to step up to the plate. You dont get to make children and then hand them off for someone else to raise. Anyway, I hope they get that childcare business settled. The military parents need a good system.

Lt Col Charlie Brown - Us too as DUAL Enlisted. Officer or Enlisted DUALs are parents and patriots simultaneously. We were lucky at most duty stations having friends or trusted professionals. But, it is hard, especially when both parents have 24 h duty at two different commands even if in same geographical area.

We had joint tours at RAF Lakenheath and RAF Alconbury almost 40 miles apart; at Ramstein in two different commands during Desert Shield/Storm with 12 plus hour shifts, it was a real challenge.
