I can only repeat what I posted in your blog...
I too have been attempting to trigger this conversation but the passions of those defending the binary choice - control/ban weapons vs 2nd Amendment rights - are sucking all the air out of the room. I only hope that when the passions subside (which they always do) people won't lose interest in a more rational debate (but the past is prologue and I expect they will, as usual, retreat to their neutral corners until the next tragedy)

I've written some things in the past about our educators... Maybe this is a local issue and I have been quite vocal in some issues here in the Southwestern Corner of New Mexico... I did not win any friends with my stance.
IMHO... there are very few, if any, conservative educators in the secondary educational system in America. In the primary educational system, we are now seeing the exact same thing occur...liberalism is winning over the educators and its manner of teaching. This created what we are seeing in the media... protesters burning our national flag, support being tossed towards , well... felons being killed after assaulting a peace officers, then claiming it to be a racial event that somehow deserves national attention... I truly understand one bad decision by one "cop" can tarnish an entire career field for months, if not years in the minds of youth.
Today, if you wee to offer concealed carry permits to educators here in my part of the world, this is what kind of response you would get... again...IMHO...
1. Are you gonna pay for the weapon, ammo, and web gear?
2. Are you shitting me...hell no I will not carry a gun into my classroom.
3. Can I get paid extra and how much extra can I get?

Sorry wrong key hit and this posted prior to editing completed...
4. Forcing me to carry a weapon into school is contrary to my civil rights...
5. I do not like guns... guns kill people...
6. Some teachers even when trained, will not be able to control the classroom and will revert to a pacifist stance, with a possibility of unintentionally arming a distraught child...
7. Classrooms are meant for teaching...not arming our children or creating an armed conflict zone...
8. Not on my watch...
9. and for the few conservative educators left in the primary school systems... Conferences in the teachers lounge now become secondary target ranges for the educators to horseplay with a live weapon and pull them out flashing them like a 10 year old with a new toy truck...
Schools are meant for educating our kids... protecting them is a entire different world. Police officers have a different goal with an entire different mindset... protect... react... and even then you get one cop who fails to act and can screw in a lightbulb backwards... Imagine one educator going ballistically postal who is armed and kills children under their control.
The State Police have a goal here... and AGAIN THIS IS MY HUMBLE OPINION... They are the best accident investigators in the entire Southwest... when you need a speeding ticket.. they are right there johnny on the spot... of the 33 counties in this State, few local agencies investigate fatal accidents...they call upon the NMSP to do them... even though the same training can be had to investigate accidents by municipalities and local Sheriffs offices. Redirecting the efforts from speeding ticket writing to something like...educational security and fact checking convicted felons homes and conducting a warrantless search for weapons.. well now that would be a step or two in a different direction wouldn't it?
Convicted felons have no expectation of privacy and are most likely to re-offend... it makes sense to have the State boys start doing unannounced visits to their home in conjunction with parole/probation officers to remove firearms, charge the felon with the possession and jail them.
It makes perfect sense to redirect them to the primary and secondary schools to perform duty.
It makes perfect sense when a person posts on social media the desire to kill, that they get visited by police, remove all weapons and then they are permanently placed on a no buy list...
Ok...rant done...
