Every done a wargame that had independent actors conducting voice interception of a combat zone as a hobby? Most probably did not even consider such existed... but they do. They always have been there - just not like today.

Back in the September 1, 1983 a USA reconnaissance RC-135, a military version of a Boeing 707, was able to pick up the Russian pilot saying 'Target destroyed.' The Russian pilot fire a couple air-to-air missiles into the doomed airliner.

What thought was interesting was not the military aspect - but that others were listening as well. Just as with others tracking every aircraft flying...... and they are not military - but do it as a hobby. HAMM radio of the new age.
