The area is known as Arsenal Park, because it is the former site of a federal arsenal that exploded when, as legend has it, the metal from a horse shoe sparked an a floor covered with gun powder, causing a massive explosion. A buddy of mine is running a metal detector on that site, and a lot of the relics are being displayed at Soldiers and Sailors museum in Pittsburgh.

Thanks for sharing the news PO1 William "Chip" Nagel. Hopefully the fuse and explosive components of the more active munitions have long since decomposed so no danger exists for those recovering the ordnance.

Local EOD/Bomb Squad (police) were on hand but there is no danger and crews have begun removing them. The sub-contractor that was doing the excavation also had specially trained personnel on hand.
