Great read, and spot on.
Jack, what's wrong with us is that we have become complacent, slothful, weak, and corrupt...not unlike a few noted empires of the past. Why did the Romans accept dictatorship? I believe there's a good argument that Julius Caesar was a "progressive", after a fashion. The poet Juvenal said it best, "bread and circuses" replacing the Roman heritage of political genius. It's arguably been a long time since the USA has faced "real" adversity...but it's anathema to suggest as much.
True hardship, threat, and degradation may be on its way...but perhaps it won't be the end. Maybe what made us truly "great" once was overcoming the odds, surviving the arduous, and achieving the unlikely. Perhaps those days will come once more...and with God's grace, hopefully without having to endure too much enroute.
