Custer’s funeral is held at West Point

Read a story about Custer in a Time-Life Western history series.
Custer had just reported to his unit out west and was out on patrol when he saw a herd of buffalo.
He sent the troops back to the post and went after the buffalo. He was planning to kill one with his pistol. No detail as what went wrong, but he wound up shooting his horse and had to walk back to the post about twenty miles away.
Probably a reason that he was the goat at WP.
