The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is under fire after reportedly breaking the law to inflate status and salaries of administrative staffers. According to Republican Senators Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst, ATF improperly and deliberately misclassified thousands of administrative positions as “law enforcement” for decades, costing taxpayers millions of dollars. The misclassification was brought to the attention of ATF leadership by whistleblowers and was ignored (Townhall). Joni Ernst: This maladministration resulted in up to $20 million in overpayments to at least 91 employees who erroneously received enhanced law enforcement salaries and benefits while performing human resources, administrative, and other non-law enforcement duties

Heck no! These are American Bureaucrats! They are a protected class!
It's not like they are some dirty, unwashed servicemember who was told to take an extra day of PTDY when it wasn't authorized or had finance screw up their paperwork and not figure it out for 3 years. THOSE sorry SOBs need to pay back every last penny - IMMEDIATELY.
But these, wonderful, hard-working American bureaucrats who give so selflessly of their time and energy, working in air-conditioned offices for 35, 40, sometimes even 42 hours a week? They are beyond reproach, and any "accidental" overpayment is surely none of their fault. Really, they earned that money, anyway, and it is a shame we can't pay them more.

I'm not shocked by this. There's a lot of unlawful practices done in the name of law enforcement.
