Democrats were checkmated when they voted for the Impeachment Inquiry. The Senate will call every anti-Trumper to testify under oath on any topic slightly related to the House's claims. And, the Senate proceedings will go on and on throughout the primary season. This will force those Senators hoping to be President to stay in Washington DC, not being able to campaign.

...or will force the democrats to abandon impeachment in favor of censure. They have known all along that actual impeachment is/was a pipedream. Their only goal was to disparage Trump going into the election year. I actually hope they vote for impeachment in the House for the reasons you outline.
