Your opinion is well thought through. It seemed unlikely that a Marine Commandant would say such a thing. Even as an E-5 in the late 50s, when funding was scarce, we didn’t take that position. But found ways to carry out our mission. I would feel much better if General Neller would make a statement on this report.

You know what’s worse? Seeing the same article on FaceBook and Twitter and all the comments are calling for the head of the Commandant for insubordination and disrespect to Trump. These are obviously uninformed Trump supporters or just simple trolling radicals that didn’t read the article and immediately assumed this was Liberal Fake News anti-Trump rhetoric. My guess is those critics have never served and don’t understand the concept of military leaders and staffs providing a readiness assessment to the chain of command.

MAJ Montgomery Granger
The knee-jerking is incentivized by the "Gotta be first" to post something in today's meat-market of social media. Believe me, I had the SAME reaction when I read the headline! Then, before reacting, I decided to READ THE ARTICLE carefully. My journalism major son told me early on that you need at a lest TWO confirmed sources in order to ethically publish an article. TWO? These people had ONE, and I have no idea if the LA Times had anything more than a LEAKED memo. There is also not mention of a comment from the Navy or Marine Corps, or the principle's mentionedini the memo. Who knows? Not important to them because they got their headline out and then a billion CLICKS on it!
