When you consider the amount of crime in Detroit and the likely response time of the police, your best option is to be able to defend yourself. If necessary, with deadly force.
As a few have mentioned. Detroit didn't get here overnight. This is decades of bad public policy, jobs leaving the area, poverty, broken families and many other things.

I agree with this to a point, but at some point, a mistake is going to happen based off what the Chief has asked. I can only hope no one is hurt or killed. But when you add additional weapons into the mix, something bad is definitely going to happen. I'd rather he petition the local, state, and federal agencies for additional recourses and monies to hire more police to place in those communities.

SSG Warren Swan Well, bad things are already happening to innocent people by the criminal element in Detroit. You cannot have a cop on every corner, it is simply impractical and too expensive to do.
Our society has operated under the premise that citizens would police themselves and generally operate within the laws. That worked for over 200 years. Now as we move into the 21st century we have a criminal element running amuck in our society. Whether it is street crime, or riots/looting etc. We have seen that even with large shows of force (Baltimore and Ferguson are two examples) by the police they cannot protect you from people bent on committing a crime.
I would suggest not waiting on the government to pass a law and a budget to support adding thousands of cops to the beat. It will not happen. Those monies come from taxpayers and Detroit is bankrupt. They have little money to do basic services.

First I think it is very sad it comes to this. A police chief asking the citizens to arm themselves is a sign of their inability to contain the criminal element of their city. This can only happen over a long period of time of failed policies and limiting the role of the police only to a reactionary position instead of enabling them to work towards crime prevention. But with the dire economy of that city it would lend itself to expose those to other than legitimate means to obtain some sort of income. That doesn't have to mean that they will resort to violence but when the opportunity is so great and the reward is high you are just made a doomed environment for the youth in your city.
I like that the citizens have the ability to do this. But it is pretty much getting the citizens to do their own law enforcement. It is a bad situation for everyone there. I am sure the city is striped for cash so this may be one of their only options to maintain a level of order in the streets. For me they are pretty much asking those in the city to gun down criminals.
