I don't think the US Dept. of Education should exist. I don't think State Depts. of Education should exist. I believe it should be 100 % controlled at the school district (local) level).
That said... if you draw a Federal paycheck and you you feel the need to resist the Federal Government from within, get a different job. Resist all you want, just not on the taxpayers dime.

Personally as a former teacher this is one federal department I wish they would abolish.
