Trying to determine that one is better than the other is a fallacy. Advantages and disadvantages were stated for each method, use those to your advantage for the situation you are in.

Akin to what MSG (Join to see) said, they have their own perks.

In a military setting I haven't seen a team move up to a breach in a close stack before, that doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Additionally, plenty of units that train constantly use the close stack for the breach, disperssed for moving.

Use the 5th principle of patrolling when in doubt.

Close is ok for police tactics, good way to loss a lot of troops in combat, where the dispersed pattern is far better.
