What's interesting to me is that it was done by Army divers, not Navy divers.

I haven't dived in a decade or longer, but isn't most of the technology the same as before WWII? While I haven't ever seen a double hose regulator, the stuff all works like the rig that Cousteau invented before WWII. The new dive helmet works the same as the old one. Outside of Dive Computers instead of analog gauges, most of the equipment isn't much different, with the exception of some of the rebreather rigs.
