This is only my personal opinion however, I believe that the political correctness that has swallowed our nation and entered our Armed Forces has created a weakened mentality. I remember what Basic was like for me and it definitely was not roses and daisies. My Drill Sergeants would curse at us, talk down to us, call us maggots, **** Heads, and other various terms of endearments. Bottom line Basic Training was designed to tear you down to nothing and rebuild you or as they like to say in the Corps "Born Again Hard". I have seen these new softer trained Soldiers in combat and few are just way out of their comfort zone and league and now we have to deal with them in the wrong environment all because some politician felt that it was wrong to belittle them during training to see if they have what it actually takes to be a Soldier/Sailor/Airman/Marine. To see a fellow NCO in any service being sentenced to prison for "Behavior" that I am sure was no more abusive than what many other Instructors have done in the past.

Bottom line, America needs to grow up, thicken their skin, and stop being a bunch of whiney little spoiled brats. We have gone from being the land of the free and home of the brave, to the land of entitlement and home of the spoiled.

To the SGT from Ft Bragg: you need to re read my comment. I NEVER said that in war those types of comments should be used, I said in combat no one will hold your hand and ask you politely to do something. As far as telling me about your multiple deployments, congrats.

SGT (Join to see), thank you for the link with additional information. I, like others, didn't have enough info to make an intelligent response.
OK. This DI (or whatever the USAF title is) went WAY over the line in several instances. Exercising naked in the showers, withholding mail, obstruction of the investigation, etc. are all punishable offenses in my mind. That tyrannical behavior is NOT acceptable nor productive.
Having said that, however, I am NOT upset with being called names - including degrading names - IF there is a useful link to changing a behavior. In my day, we were routinely degraded and physically threatened in boot camp, but I know now that the intent was to eliminate any residual of individualism detrimental to being taught how to be part of a ship's crew.
Now, if some instructor at Electrician's Mate "C" School (advanced training) tried the same stuff, I would have acted very differently.
Wrapping up... If I get yelled at and threatened in boot camp (for an actual infraction or stupid attitude), NO HARM - NO FOUL. You start denying a recruit basic protections (food, physical safety, authorized contact with family), "youse and me's gonna have issues" as we say here in Chi-Town. Expect a good ol' South Side Tune-Up...
Sounds like the Air Farce (oops...) Air Force did it right, here. Too bad she's not going to Leavenworth. That place is still "serviced" by Uncle Sammy's Misguided Children, right?

Yes, it is basic is meant to break you down so you can be rebuilt, however, abuse is not a part of that. Yell, scream, make people do pushups, that is all fine. Not allowing a trainee to eat is dangerous, if the shower stories are true that is way beyond the line. Honestly I don't agree with the sentence, it wasn't harsh enough. I am just glad that no trainees were permanently harmed by her actions.

I understand we only see the information from the article.
I think what's important here is that there is action being taken to rid the services of a toxic leader, a leader which think he/she is bigger than the organization. To put this in a different perspective for you, if you were the father or mother of an Airman, Soldier, Sailor, Marine or Coast Guardsman.....that was abused, wouldn't you want the person responsible for the abuse to be brought to justice?!! I think it's a great article, shows that our military justice works, regardless of branch of service, race, religion, sex. Thanks for sharing.

To that end, isn't it insulting that she got so little time? She got less than 1/43 the max? I've noticed that trend across the spectrum of military trials from drugs, to this, to sexual assaults. The military seems loath to order confinement.

A lot of that probably comes down to money. It costs a lot of money to put someone in prison, money that could be used to buy new equipment, improve facilities... a dishonorable discharge does follow you for the rest of your life... hard to find employment past McDonald's with one. Not saying it is right, but that is probably what the thinking is.

All I can say is that as an infantry recruit in early 1990, people today would lose their minds. Then again, Vietnam vets would laugh at what I endured, and WWII vets would laugh at the Vietnam vets experiences. At the rate we are going, in 20 years, we will look back at these charges in horror. To me, I'm sorry, but I still wear my big boy pants.
