Yes. I'm posting this before reading the article, but thanks to some really, really badly-performing elevators that I routine have to interact with, I can say that yes, the close-doors button on at least some elevators does actually do something. It might be hard to tell on elevators designed/manufactured/installed by competent people, but on really borderline elevators, you can perform the experiment with clear evidence.

SGT (Join to see) I Love the Bit about elevators. One of those things that Add Perspective. I got to Operate a Freight Elevator without a "Button" but a Handle after I Retired. Talk About Old School. It was the Mark Twain Bldg, Old Continental Hotel in Kansas City. Learning to Line Up the Elevator is Definitely a Learned Skill. When it Comes to Technology I'd say I'm Historian, As Part of My Job I've Done Urban Spelunking in Kansas City, I Trained in A School with with WWII Equipment but I also worked on Arpanet/Milnet Project and PDP-11/70.
