SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL I think the full active duty General Officer/Admiral numbers are proportionate to the active military duty forces. the Reserve Component is a different matter. Army, Navy and AF Reserve are federal officers. However the National Guard officers are primarily state officers unless they are federalized [generalization - pun intended]
Every state in the union has general officers because they have national guard positions. The Adjutant General for instance is frequently a 2 star AF more likely Army general. These positions are the primary reason you can see O-8 under 2 years service.
Full time active duty general officers are entirely under the federal government and much more closely managed that Reserve Component Generals who are not full time officers.

Wish I understood the Logic. "Ours is not to Reason Why, Ours is but to do or Die" Worked on 2 Admirals Staffs, CINCPACFLT and COMSPAWARSYSCOM and in Direct Support of a 3rd CINCUSNAVEUR. I did like every Admiral I served under though from Little Tommy T Hayward to exceptionally tall RADM Dixon. Neat Colorful Indivduals.

SFC Joe S. Davis Jr., MSM, DSL The number of General Officers should be based on the force structure, not some career politicians' ideas of what is too much. Assign the correct grade to the authorized positions and also look at the staff positions, to include joint duty and foreign liaison duty positions.
Also equalize the grades of active and reserve component positions. For example, an MP brigade commander of an active duty MP brigade is a colonel (COL), but is a brigadier general (BG) in the reserve components. (The active duty position is authorized a BG, but filled by a COL).
My opinion... We don't have too many generals ... We have too few units/troops as a result of the Obama Administration gutting the military.

There are too many general officers. There are too many commissioned officers. What there aren't enough of, is warrant officers in small unit leadership.

Cpl Bill Johnson - I disagree that we need more Warrant Officers. Warrant Officers are specialists/technicians. Small unit leaders are NCOs, Lieutenants and Captains.
