The pick of retired Gen. James Mattis as defense secretary by Donald Trump provides hope that the Pentagon, at least, will be in stable hands.
Given that even Michèle Flournoy, who would have been in line for the job in a Clinton administration, cheered for the Marine before he got the nod on Dec. 1 should tell Democrats that while the selection may not sit well with some, it could have been far worse.

Hopefully his selection won't be bogged down in the political quagmire following the circus of the election we just endured. The way I see it Mattis will have a few obstacles to overcome in actually getting the seat. The first will be him getting a wavier to serve in the position because of his recent service. While that rule is in place to supposedly keep us from having the Military too much say in ruling the country it is a safeguard that is not needed. The hippocracy is that, to the best of my knowledge high ranking military officers have little or no restrictions on their being employed by defense contractors after retirement.
Second is that his vision for the military, training to fight and win America's Wars, first and foremost, does not fall within the views of many politicians who see the military as a place to conduct social experiments.
Third, Mattis has pulled no punches in announcing that swift, violent action is the ethos of a warrior. His statements about shooting bad guys, killing those who try to fight against his forces, devastating his enemies and " having a plan to kill everyone he meets" and cxalling anti-war protesters "pussies" are fodder for his opponents to use against him.
