I became an avid reader in 3rd or 4th grade when we lived in the Territory of Hawaii - my dad was stationed at Hickam and I attended Pearl Harbor Elementary at the Naval Base. I would check out ten books a week at the base library to read after school - nothing great, just Tarzan, the Hardy Boys, Nancy Drew and Tom Swift. By junior high I was reading college chemistry and physics for fun. It was a habit I maintained all the way through high school. Books are essential to expanding one;s knowledge. It would seem that our school administrators are dictating what gets taught and what doesn't and the teachers have to follow... In Massachusetts, teachers prepare a lesson plan and teachers aids do the teaching...at least that is what I have been told... If this is true, heaven help us...

My son began reading when video games became a rage. Neighbors lamented the things saying they wouldn't allow them in their houses. So, all their kids wound up at ours watching our son play. He taught himself to read so that he could read the instructions and apply them to successfully navigate the challenges. Interestingly, I witnessed him develop critical thinking powers as he began to recognize patterns in the game programming and anticipate challenges thereby navigating them ever more expertly. His reading was so far advanced beyond his peers that he was reading at a college level in the early elementary school years.
