This is frusturating to me on both ends.
I see this problem alot, but usually it is not quite to this degree.
My perception of this issue is that:
A) ALOT of workers are sub-standard.
B) ALOT of employers are sub-standard.
I think both issues absolutely need to be corrected. Otherwise, I believe our current system will inevitably fail.
Employees and job seekers:
If you are an employee, (especially as a new employee) you need to be viewed as responsible, reliable, hard-working, respectful, efficient, clean, at least semi-professional, and someone who can use common sense and make sound judgement calls. At minumum.
Higher skilled professions will require more.
You should not be showing up to work drunk. You probably should not be hungover either. If it's a problem, then quit drinking.
You should have showered, have clean clothes, brushed your teeth, washed your hands, etc before you even come into work. Usually you can even do some of that there. Go to bed at a decent time and start getting up early, it'll make a world of difference.
It is amazing to me how that people do not seem to get this. I understand that not everyone has working showers, not everyone can shave, not everyone has a home, etc. That is a valid excuse...but not doing those things when you have every opportunity to is kind of ridiculous.
Eat a hearty breakfast every morning and stay well hydrated throughout the day too.
Employers:
I understand the need for cheap labor. You also need to remember that these people are coming to work for you so that they can make a living.
Be generous, especially to those who are willing to stick around.
Remember that they are spending the majority of their lives making money for YOU, in return for only a small percentage of that being returned to them.
"You cannot hire American here"
You can absolutely hire American, you just need to pay them decent wages for them to make a living, and treat them reasonably well...or at least hire young people who are looking for work experience if you absolutely can't afford to pay higher wages.
What you put into it, you'll get out of it (usually). If you run a business and can't offer anything more than $12 an hr, no paid vacation, no employment benefits, etc. then you should not be suprised when quality employees do not stick around.
"They will not be clean, they will not be sober, they will work for a day, ask for their paycheck and never show up again"
If it's only one person doing that then they probably have a problem. It cannot be helped.
If you have a continous problem where alot of people are doing that, it is worth considering that YOU might be causing the problem.
Ensure that your business is somewhere that is desireable to work. It will go a long way.
Employees are the foundation of your business and help to make a profit that helps you live your life.
You should treat them with the utmost respect. Maybe ask them what can be improved and allow them to speak their minds.
