Sgt Wayne Wood, my father (on the right) visited the Ernie Pyle Memorial on the island of Ie Shima (Iejima) northwest of Okinawa Island during WWII. The inscription reads simply: "AT THIS SPOT THE 77th INFANTRY DIVISION LOST A BUDDY ERNIE PYLE 18 APRIL 1945." Photo was taken between 7AUG45 and 16AUG45. CWO3 (Join to see)

Nice share of your Dad. The Marines still train there, and some make command visits. Many forget the Army's overall presence at Okinawa, but they were definitely there. There is a small marker aboard Camp Foster where USA LTG Simon B. Buckner was mortally wounded by artillery. His replacement was USMC Maj Gen Roy S. Geiger, making him the only USMC to ever command a field Army, the 10th. Geiger was the only Marine Corps representative at the surrender of Japan aboard the USS Missouri (BB-63) on September 2, 1945. There are still several Army commands aboard the island, including SF, communications and theater support.

Him and so many like him - embedded - before it was cool. I'd read a little about his death but not that he had received the Purple Heart. Good story and thanks for sharing.
