Even In 'The War To End All Wars,' There Was Art Coming From The Trenches

First thing I noticed on that "The Sentry" painting from Harvey Dunn was the eyes.

My comment is not specifically related to WWI art, but maybe to add some background to it that may help us appreciate it a bit more.
The French lost 1,400,000 men (more than 4% of their population; that % would represent nearly 13,000,000 Americans today); 885,000 British soldiers died; 1,811,000 Russians; the Central Powers lost over 4,000,000 soldiers. All together, more than 10,000,000 soldiers died in WWI, and more than 21,000,000 were wounded. Counting civilian deaths as a result of disease, famine, massacres, and collateral damage, it is estimated that somewhere between 16,500,000 and 65,000,000 people died.
We often forget--or didn't know--how staggering the loss of life was from WWI.
