Great article. It gives a clear picture that tells a very disturbing story. War does a great deal of things to people who have returned from its aftermath. Vietnam still produces more wounded individuals 45-55 years later. One of my theories is on this... I believe that some type of moral injury has something to do with this. My own research is starting to prove this to sme degree.
Moral injury is the result of unresolved guilt, shame, hatred of self, wounding of the soul at a core level that violates the very essence of who we are. We remember what we did, did not do, were told to do, that violated our conscience at some level. We have never resolved that injury within who we are. Now manny manny years later it is coming back to haunt us.This wound is so deep that medical science cannot heal its festering in the soul. This is where religion and spirituality can and does make a difference. What is needed is cleansing, acceptance, and forgiveness. maybe as simple as forgiving one's self for what ever... This can only be done thorugh a spiritual authority wha can lead one thorugh the cleansing, healing and forgiving process.
Homelessness is but one of the manifestations of the woundedness. When you're not settled inside of who you are, you'll not be sellted in your work, relationship ore where you reside in terms of a home or dwelling. Thus homelessness comes with the vet wondering around aimlessly disconnected living under the stars. There is of course more to this problem than the short diatribe I'm offering here. But it should be enough to raise the eyebrows of vets who do have a roof over their head with all the trimmings. We can and must do something about this.
My question to the RP community is what can we do, or more specific, what are you willing to do about this. Our brothers and sisters are living in the streets... can we respond? If so, HOW?
