The Air Force Academy is investigating a false report of a shooting on Academy grounds.
The incident caused a scare Tuesday night as law enforcement and first responders swarmed the installation.
"It was, like, not even real. I am walking out of swim team practice and there's literally, like, semi-auto rifles pointed at me and my daughter and her little friend," said a civilian who was at the academy Tuesday evening for her daughter's swim team lessons.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office said they received several 911 calls just after 8 Tuesday night regarding a possible shooting. Deputies, Air Force firefighters and security forces all responded to the scene.
By 10 p.m., no evidence of a shooting was found. A law enforcement source told 11 News the whole thing appeared to be a false alarm or possibly a case of swatting. Swatting is when someone intentionally calls in a false report to get law enforcement to respond.
At this time, it's still unclear where the reports of a shooting originated, but if law enforcement does find out it was a case of swatting, the person responsible could face charges. Swatting is a crime.
