Family members of the gunman who killed two and wounded several others during a shooting rampage at Central Visual and Performing Arts High School recently asked police to take a gun from the home, interim St. Louis Metropolitan Police Chief Michael Sack said Wednesday. They also had been monitoring his mental health and helped him get treatment and medication.
The gunman at Central Visual Performing Arts High School obtained his firearm from a private seller after an FBI background check blocked his attempt to buy one from a licensed dealer, St. Louis Police said Thursday.
Orlando Harris tried to purchase his gun at a dealer in St. Charles, but was rejected, Sgt. Charles Wall said in a statement. Police did not provide details of the rejection.

A lot of people are pushing for universal background checks on any firearm sale, to include private sales. While I'm not necessarily opposed to the concept, my big question is, "How do we enforce it?"
Lets say you and I meet in a parking lot or in one of our houses for the purpose of selling/buying a firearm. Other than personal integrity, what mechanism is there to enforce the seller contacting the appropriate agency for a check? We could argue the seller could be held liable for any harm caused by the buyer but would it really matter after the fact? The seller could just claim the gun had been stolen and we'd be back to square one.
