I wish the Air Force had been as kind to me. After 22 years, I was medically retired with epilepsy. This is controllable, but I was found unfit. The stigma associated with certain medical conditions scares people. The answer was to end my career, not help me. Thank goodness for many of my commanding officers from other services that had my back. If you aren't a line officer (pilot) in the Air Force, it can be challenging to make your mission relevant. I'm glad they have helped several amputees return to duty.

LT Miranda Bernabei - Thanks, the same thing happened to my husband. It was a combination or the Air Force Nursing branch and downsizing. There are only so few slots at the top of the pyramid. Any opportunity, flaw or other excuse, have to move on to make room for those who have the connections. In all things it is a tough road. Every service is the same.

Thanks for letting us know that USAF HC-130J rescue squadron pilot Capt. Christy Wise returned to her pilot duties almost one year after her right leg was amputated in a boating accident.
Modern medicine has coma long way in restoring capabilities which a generation ago would have generally resulted in loss of limb and/or death.
Kudos to Capt. Christy Wise.
