Finding help and hope with a 3 a.m. call to Veterans Crisis Line - VAntage Point

I worked a Crisis Line years ago. I did it for a year, until I lost a caller, committing suicde. He called to let me know he was going to kill himself. Most people do that just to talk and don't commit suicde. We talked over an hour, and at one point, I thought he was going to change his mind. The phone got very silent, and he shot himself. I called 911 and reported it. When I went in the next night, my supervisor said he received a call, and in fact the guy killed himself. This isn't a game folks. It's very real. Up to the suicde, most callers just wanted to talk. There some who called every night just to talk, and say crazy ass things. This paragraph is from a woman who called VCL.

I did something the other night that I never thought I’d do. I called a crisis hotline.

It was 3 a.m. and I’d been crying for hours. All of the pent up emotions of the past few months had surfaced and I was drowning in a sea of despair.

I have no idea how I got to this point. I’ve always considered myself a half-glass-full kind of person, buoying myself up with an inherent optimism even when life threw me a few curve balls. But this divorce had knocked the wind out of me; left me gasping for breath.

Night after night sleep evaded me. I couldn’t staunch the flood of tears, the exhaustion or the overwhelming sadness and regret.
