Some really good thoughts here. While some apply only to weapons, a number apply to any skill you are learning. You will never reach a "professional" level on your own.

Great post. When I re-engaged training on my own initiative (as a civilian), I made a commitment to myself that I'd do two things: First, that I'd regard all previous training as "archived"-possibly useful, possibly not. Second, that I'd find training that pushed me harder than I was "comfortable" with. Ultimately, I chose a course and instructor who quickly showed me how little of that "archived" knowledge was actually still "there" (in terms of muscle memory and correct application)... and pushed me well beyond limits I thought I knew. My first session (kinda a "try-out" for his longer-term course) was nearly eight hours, and I left battered, bruised, and with about 200 rounds expended. That was a while ago, and I still train with him, and still have a lot to learn.
