Thanks for reminding us TSgt Joe C. that on July 17, 1996 shortly after takeoff from New York’s Kennedy International Airport, a TWA Boeing 747 jetliner bound for Paris exploded over the Atlantic Ocean, killing all 230 people aboard. Flight 800 had just received clearance to initiate a climb to cruise altitude when it exploded without warning. Because the plane was loaded with fuel for the long transatlantic journey, it vaporized within moments, creating a fireball seen almost all along the coastline of Long Island.
That and other events most likely gave al Qaeda designers the idea to use fully-fueled aircraft as weapons.

I support the theory that an accidental missile launch from a U.S.Navy warship caused the loss. A FOIA request to the Secretary of the Navy might dislodge any classified information that might have been collected by federal investigators.
