It's a very worthy line of work. I flew the Bell 412 for UT LIFESTAR back in the day, and the paramedic flew front seat enroute - and backseat with the Nurse and patient on the hospital leg. The paramedic was my eyes on the ground, and provided extremely valuable input - including watching for other aircraft and obstacles in flight.
