The problem with articles from rags like Slate, is they don't use actual facts to make their point. They use generalities, "everyone knows" type facts, and emotion to make a point.
1) It doesn't matter if the person who is robbing you is male or female, black, white, or Hispanic. You aren't considering whether there is a racial disparity or gender bias in their actions.
2) FBI UCR statistics show over 60% of ALL violent crimes including murder, agg assault, robbery, and more are committed by minorities. Police are more likely to have violent encounters with minorities committing crimes due to this reason.
3) The case cited (McBean shooting), McBean purchases an air rifle (looks like real rifle), walks along street carrying the rifle, police are called and respond, police yell at McBean to drop the rifle (he didn't hear them, he was listening to music with ear buds), at one point police shoot. The case is tragic, but from the police officers view, a person with a rifle was walking on the street and during the encounter, their life was in danger.

If you were the officer, what would you do? You can not ignore the call. You can not tell if the rifle is real or loaded. The person is not responding to your commands. You don't know if the person plans to shoot you or someone else (why would someone walk along a street in a city carrying a rifle? Action is quicker than reaction (if the person decides to shoot at you, you will seldom be able to shoot back in time to stop them).

I don't know if a case involving a police officer is a good test. They already have the scale of justice way tipped their way. Seems like they get fired for some egregious act and just go two counties over and get hired by a different department.

Ask yourself would you rather have Florida's laws or New Jersey telling you to turn in all your magazines of greater than 10 rounds?

All in all I like SYG. And look what happened with George Zimmerman. Sent home with no charges and 45 days later charged with 2nd degree murder. I saw an interview with one of the jurors after the trial and she said that based on the judges charge there was no way they could convict GZ. Of course he was able to raise $2,000,000 for his defense which is a big help.

Couple of things:
1) Everyone in law enforcement that I know (I have over 32 years in Florida law enforcement), said at the time that there was no way Zimmerman could be successfully charged with murder based on the testimony and evidence (Zimmerman was on the ground, stated his head was being smashed in to the ground-evidence that Martin was on top of Zimmerman). The State Attorneys office and local police department did not file charges initially based on self defense. The Governor appointed a special prosecutor after demands from community activists. The Special Prosecutor over filed murder charges which has a high level to successfully convict.

2) Zimmerman did not use a Stand Your Ground defense

3) While activists routinely demand that Police officers be charged in almost every shooting, there is a reason why this seldom occurs. It is because society requires law enforcement to go into situations that are dangerous. Things happen. A quick flash of metal that is a gun or knife, if the officer is right, he lives another day. If he is wrong, he is a pariah. Real life isn't like TV, the officer doesn't have 360 degree vision and doesn't know everything about the person or situation beforehand.

If a States Attorney chooses to charge a Police Officer for doing their job with no evidence of wrong doing, they risk alienating law enforcement. This occurred in Baltimore Maryland in the Freddie Grey case. 6 officers were charged for murder, no conviction, Officers drastically scaled back all law enforcement actions for fear of legal charges, violent crime skyrocketed to a 30 year high and has not declined.

I agree with all of that. You may recall that the Chief of Police in Sanford was fired after this thing with Zimmerman hit the national spotlight and violence was threatened unless he was charged with -something-. I thought at the time that the Police Chief might not have been fired if he had found SOMETHING for GZ to be charged with immediately. He might have needed to be supernaturally gifted with foresight to see that he needed to get GZ charged, but that is basically why he had to go.
