OT but I was scheduled for the next liberty hop (C-47) from Iwakuni, Japan to Taipei in late 1978. The guys that had been before said they had a great time and that our $ went a long ways for food and sightseeing. Then Taiwan got angry over our relations with China and Marines at US Embassy lowered the colors the last time on 12/31/78. Needless to say, close but no cigar on liberty in Taipei for me.

The former US Ambassador house in Taipei - taken two months back when was in Taiwan to see the Chinese New Year Lantern festival . Highly recommend a vacation in Taipei - great food and sitesseing and excellent public transportation (and the metro is cheap way to get around the city fast).

Thanks for sharing that Colonel. I was looking forward to going but it never happened. The guys before me said fruit was hard to come by and it's still that way on Okinawa due to it having to be shipped in. Last time on The Rock a large red apple was around $1 in the commissary. In 78 the guys said to take a bag of apples with you and you'd be golden, because you could use them as an almost currency. The local college here has a large number of Taiwanese students and they are mostly very friendly toward Americans. A former USMC LtGen, Henry Stackpole foretold of events such as the current situation in the region, but most did not believe it at the time. That was over 20 years ago. His wife was Asian and he knew the regional history well. http://www.hawaiireporter.com/not-ready-to-meet-his-creator-lt-general-h-c-hank-stackpole-iii-u-s-marine-corps-retired
