A former Chinese intelligence chief has received a sentence of life in prison on charges of accepting bribes and insider trading — becoming the latest official held to account as part of a massive crackdown on corruption under President Xi Jinping.
Ma Jian, appointed deputy head of the Ministry of State Security in 2006, was convicted on charges spanning a 15-year period that began years before his appointment to the post that oversees Beijing's counter-intelligence operations, according to sources quoted by The South China Morning Post.
He was dismissed from his post in 2015 and placed under investigation. Ma was expelled from the Communist Party the following year.
In addition to his life sentence, the Dalian Intermediate People's Court ordered Ma to pay a fine of $7.35 million.
