If the motorcycle safety classes are today anything like the past then they contributed to this death. I stopped riding because the Army motorcycle requirements did nothing to prevent these kinds of deaths. The expert MSF class mostly entailed riding around in square boxes and did nothing for defensive driving. Took the Hawaii add on in 2007 and it was a joke as well. My Father who taught me to ride always taught me to ride defensively and expect cars not to see me. Army took away the orange vest requirement but still has you wearing a coat of armor. Over the ankle boots would not have saved this soldier and probably not the vest either but at least the vest could make the difference in a automobile driver seeing you. We have spent so much time protecting the soldier from himself that we totally missed the defensive driving aspect.
