Sad, but most skydiving accidents occur with experienced jumpers. Hook turns are the most dangerous below 500 feet. We had one of our guys break his femor from a hook turn. He almost died from the loss of blood. I remember the late SGM Shumate telling us OTC students to stay away from civilian jump clubs. I don't believe in freak accidents. I'd bet he was trying to hit the pit. He was too low for the manuever in my experience. I was on an air team which our SOP was to only do hook turns at high altitudes after openings and checking things out. A square chute loses a lot of air on tight turns which there is very little time to compensate and flare when initiated at 150 feet or below. Opinions vary. RIP Soldier!
